Tuesday Thoughts

Election Time..

With elections about 2 weeks away, I am going to help out with phone banking this and next weekend and any other way that I can help.
I also got polled by the same outfit via telephone for the 2nd time in 3 months. One of the questions what is your opinion of "dear leader"
one option... "very unfavorable" ...BINGO! No guesses to what I picked. ;-)

He Knows To Use Google...

Oh dear leader is a genius..he uses "the google"..link here
Transcript:

HOST: I’m curious, have you ever googled anybody? Do you use Google?

BUSH: Occasionally. One of the things I’ve used on the Google is to pull up maps. It’s very interesting to see — I’ve forgot the name of the program — but you get the satellite, and you can — like, I kinda like to look at the ranch. It remind me of where I wanna be sometimes.

Ya know you can go there for good..just resign ;)

35000 In Secret Prisons?

link
Sid says that Wilkerson, Powell’s old chief of staff, believes that the correct number of victims in secret Bush prisons is 35,000, only %5 of which “may” have to do with terrorism. More than twice what I thought, and hardly any to do with the “war on terror.”
The number may be 35,000 or 14,000 but my question is --
why won't they try them and you know why there is no habeas corpus now right?

World's Pollution Hotspots Mapped

Not surprisingly China and India make that list..

Chernobyl, site of the best known industrial accident in recent years, is on the list; but the remainder would be largely unknown to the uninitiated.

They include:

  • Dzerzhinsk in Russia, a Cold War chemical weapons site
  • Linfen, heart of China's coal industry
  • Kabwe in Zambia, site for mining and smelting of metals including lead
  • Haina in the Dominican Republic, where battery recycling and smelting have left huge concentrations of lead in residents
  • Ranipet in India, where more than 3m people are affected by tannery waste
On A Lighter Note..

Regarding the 35,000. How much more will it take to get people to pay attention and vote? My heart is heavy and sad.

That baby looks like he's body surfing!

Lol @ guy holding the mirror! wonder where that picture was from?

Maybe you can have some of those "victims" come live with you while they're on trial. Like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, perhaps. Whadya say?

Go Ned Lamont!

JD...maybe you should go live with KSM in a secret prison.

All you have to do is get somebody mad enough to call you an enemy combatant and take away your habeas corpus rights.

If you're truly a lawyer, I hope that you're not a constitutional lawyer...you are obviously ignorant when it comes to legal issues like habeas corpus.

People have to be tried and put away if guilty you know not just held without charges? Isn't that the American thing to do and the right thing?

Indefinite detention without charges is unamerican and if you support that you are just plain unamerican.

And you call yourself a lawyer? Phooey!

Jordan's Dad said...

What?? Questioning my patriotism? Outrageous!! I thought that was off limits since you people whine about it all the time.

You liberals - so nasty!

(the detention of foreign nationals is no different now than from prior wars. look into it. And you might want to read the recent law passed by congress which denies habeas review to foreign suspects.)

And you call yourself informed?? Phooey!

Sanjay said...

What?? Questioning my patriotism? Outrageous!! I

Hurt did it? How about Rush Limbaugh calling Michael J Fox with his Parkinson's and treatment related symptoms in an interview as "acting". The nastiness started from your side, now don't whimper in the corner when you get a dose of the same.

The new law can be applied to citizens as well. Get real.

"(e)(1) No court, justice, or judge shall have jurisdiction to hear or consider an application for a writ of habeas corpus filed by or on behalf of an alien detained by the United States who has been determined by the United States to have been properly detained as an enemy combatant or is awaiting such determination."

I suppose that you would approve of such actions if they were taken against your wife when she wasn't yet a US citizen.

Tee hee!

The most unpatriotic people in this country are the ones currently running it. They're destroying what this country represents, and they're doing it because they're power and money-hungry.

So...JD...why would you support policies that would harm your own family members through no fault of their own, if they were ever applied to your family? How can you justify that?

Well good fun reading ...
The domocratic ad with an actual sush plant] was funny ... but not sure if it's running everywhere ...

The kid with kitten photo ... is sooooooo sweet!!!

Since you follow Jon Stewart ... did you chance to see his interview with John Ashcroft ... he cornered him so well ... and also allowed him to save face. It was an excellent show.

I was being sarcastic, Jay. I could care less if you think I'm unpatriotic.

Once again, Jay, I have to explain to you that no one votes for Rush Limbaugh. I don't even listen to his show. And what does he have to do with your complete and total ignorance of the law and constitutional issues?

That's your standard weasel out response. I was merely pointing to intolerance and the lack of civility from your side.

The law is what it is. But you putting your head in the sand is nothing new.

BTW a natural born citizen has no special protection under the military commissions act.

Delude yourself if you want. You can go argue with lawyers who think this law can be applied to citizens as well.

Sanjay said...

I was being sarcastic, Jay.

Try reality for a change will ya?

As for your response to anon's comment. I will let whoever anan is respond.
Ignorant and bigoted? Try that wing of your party. Maybe you are like one of those gay repubs who continue to vote for the gop despite how they are despised in the base.

Hey but if ya wanna be ignorant ya wanna be ignorant.

@Nancy, India has had it's share of environmental issues and it's not all due to globalization.

JD said..."My wife was a US citizen the day she was born. You ignorant bigoted fucks"

So what if she was? You're the ignorant bigot who thinks that a law is okay if it's applied only to those who aren't US citizens. And what if that's not the case? What if it's applied to US citizens too? It suddenly would be unacceptable in your eyes.

Who's the bigot now? I think you have proved my case without even realizing it, crybaby.

You dont have to be a lawyer, Jay. You just need to know how to read. The Act and its habeas provisions applies to ALIENS. Do I need to explain that term to you?

Learn to read.

"The Act and its habeas provisions applies to ALIENS. Do I need to explain that term to you?"

I realize that you were speaking to Jay, but come on, you're only digging yourself deeper and deeper! You have proven time and time again that YOU are the ignorant bigot, not me. YOU approve of the suspension of habeas corpus so long as it applies only to non-citizens. Perhaps you have forgotten this poem (inscribed at the National Holocaust Memorial in Boston):

They came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

JD, what is your problem? You don't have to come here, but you do. You don't have to provoke people, but you do. You present a false dichotomy, that standing up for civil rights of people who have not been convicted of a crime is equivalent to embracing terrorism. Then you explode when people fight back. You dish it out, but you can't take it. Grow up or get lost.

Hurling epithets at someone is really the last resort of someone who cannot make a logical, persuasive argument. As a lawyer, you really should have realized that by now. But as a member of the GOP, your rationality - and in particular your morality - are questionable at best. I bet you're the kind of lawyer that would try to make a quick buck helping to split up a family. Kind of like this guy:

posts?page=12#12

So much for us being ignorant fucks. Hmm, I wonder what else I might find with Google?

As to the Military Commissions Act, it's technically true that denial of habeas corpus only applies to non-citizens, but even that claim by conservatives is disingenuous. Citizens who are declared enemy combatants (an undefined term that can thus be applied at the government's whim) cannot use habeas corpus in the setting of a normal court. Even if that were not the case, denial of habeas corpus to non-citizens is still despicable and antithetical to the values of this country. As is the ability to declare citizens and non-citizens enemy combatants, throw them into jail and torture them, which is now legal. So in fact the new law does apply to your family, regardless of its citizenship status. It seems to me that the MCA does away with the bedrock of American law: presumption of innocence, right of the accused to examine the evidence, and right to a fair trial.

It looks this act was designed for purely political purposes. First, it is part of the GOP's continued effort to keep the public in a constant state of fear, which has in recent times led to the election of Republicans, though perhaps no longer. Secondly, and probably more importantly, it immunizes administration officials against legal action in the case that Democrats take control of either house of Congress, launch investigations, and demonstrate that the Bush administration has been wantonly violating the law.

Dem -

Thanks for showing you are yet another ignorant fuck who reads this site. I wont waste much time with you, except for a few points.

#1 - dont bring my family into the conversation, and I wont "hurl epithets".

#2 - as for the case you think you are so clever for finding, it is a "pro bono" case. I know you probably dont have any idea what that means since you're such an idiot, but it means that neither I nor my firm makes a dime off it. I suppose you support my clients father who was convicted of abusing her? Or the mother who blamed the daughter for it? Dont speak about what you know nothing about (although thats pretty much all liberals do).

#3 - I am fully aware that people can learn my identity and I've never attempted to hide it. Jay doesnt hide his either for that matter. But you cant say the same, can you? Afraid of something? If not, then lets find out who you are?

#4 - as for the rest, youre as ignorant as the rest of these guys, and I'm not going to waste my time educating you.

Have fun on google. Moron.

Poor JD. You have such thin skin. Like I said, you can dish it out, but you can't take it, which is ironic considering you come here with only belligerent intentions. Face it, you're not here to engage in a respectful debate. You are here to echo GOP talking points and intimidate liberals. And your arguments are absurd. You can't even base them on facts and logic. You accuse people who want to defend the rights of the unconvicted of coddling terrorists, and you won't defend your position when confronted with your speciousness. Well Mr. Lawyer, why don't we just apply your principle to all people accused of crimes in this country? Let's dispense with the legal process altogether. Accused of murder? Just execute on the spot. It would save everyone money, except for lawyers like you. In fact, the cavalier righteousness of people like you is why we are stuck in Iraq while it crumbles around us. Way to go on that one! I should send you a fiddle and you can change your handle to Nero.

Get serious: the MCA may specify "aliens", but if you are declared an enemy combatant and thrown in a secret prison, exactly what legal process is going to allow you to prove that you are actually a citizen? You are an apologist and an enabler for a party that is stripping away centuries of liberties that the soldiers you say you hold in such high esteem have fought for, including my relatives.

As to your family, nobody attacked them, least of all me. You started making insulting posts, someone responded in a way he or she thought might be more meaningful to you, and you flew off the handle. Simple as that. And you continue.

Thanks for proving my point that wingnuts must resort to name-calling when they can't make reality-based arguments. The GOP is a deliberately divisive, deceitful, immoral party. Watching it implode as reality catches up to it is unpleasant in the same sense it is disgusting to watch an injured shark get ripped to shreds by its cohorts. Still, one less vicious predator on the loose.

As to your providing free legal counsel to that 18 yr old, maybe you can find someone else to give you a medal. The case the article described wasn't about bringing her father to justice. It was about suing her mother for ridiculous reasons. I can only base my judgment on what was printed, and there wasn't anything more there than what I just summarized. Congratulations to you if there was another case and you brought a criminal to justice. Of course, according to you, proof of guilt doesn’t matter. It is enough to incarcerate someone, indefinitely even, with no recourse, merely because an accusation has been made. That’s what this whole argument has really been about. So save your sanctimony for someone else, and look up the word ignorant before you use it so loosely again.

Jordan's Dad said...

I see you're still hiding, Dem. How brave.

Lets find out who you are, and then maybe I'll take the time to respond to your nonsense.
